How did Neville get the Gryffindor sword back from the goblin? I must have missed something.....

The general consensus is that the Gryffindor sword comes when needed and can be pulled from the Sorting Hat by a true Gryffindor in need regardless of where it was last seen. I'm sort of amused by the thought that the sword may have been reclaimed by the Goblins several times but keeps going back to the hat when needed.

Hrm. This sounds good, but a little elaboration would have been nice. You'd think Harry would have been a little curious......

...huh...

You know, of all the things in the book that were semi-random, this one made the most sense to me. It just made perfect sense to me that in a world where everyone can teleport and port keys exist, that that sword can always be pulled from that hat. I found it amusing that the goblin betrayed Harry and got nothing worthwhile from the process.

You're right, Harry should have been at least a little curious, but he probably learned that in the interveening 19 years. :)

Didn't Harry, in fact, do this in an earlier book, which is how we first got acquainted with the sword? And I'm fairly sure this was mentioned in HP7 in re Neville, briefly, once.

...I agree it was confusing. I definitely had a moment of "how did he get that from the goblins?!?" I think Rowling lays the groundwork for everything she does, but sometimes expects a little too much of our detail memory, after seven books and a decade.

Yes, I'm pretty sure Harry pulled that same sword from the hat to kill the Basilisk with, so that would've been in Chamber of Secrets.
